FAQ
Abura is Japanese for 'oil' and soba is a type of Japanese noodle made from buckwheat. Abura soba literally just means buckwheat noodles served with oil (instead of broth). And this is where it gets a little confusing: abura soba usually isn't made with soba noodles at all.
Traditional ingredients include shoyu tare base, aroma oil, menma, shredded nori, and green onions. Other variations also include toppings like raw garlic, raw egg, cheese, and minced meat, which are mixed with the noodles before eating.
One type of noodles most tourists haven't heard about yet is abura soba. It literally means 'oily noodles'. Unlike the way noodles are usually prepared, abura soba has no soup. Instead, all the ingredients are stacked on top of each other and then mixed.
So follow this curated guide and enjoy abura soba like a pro.
