FAQ
Nagashi Somen literally means “flowing noodles.” It is a fun way to eat noodles where you have to catch them. I guess sometimes, you do have to work for your food. The noodles are served in restaurants with long bamboo shoots filled with running water where strings of noodles are dropped in to flow to the customers.
Some restaurants offer nagashi-sōmen (流しそうめん flowing noodles) in the summer. The noodles are placed in a long flume of bamboo across the length of the restaurant. The flume carries clear, ice-cold water. As the sōmen pass by, diners pluck them out with their chopsticks and dip them in tsuyu.
The price of enjoying nagashi on the Kibune River is pretty reasonable – about 1,500 yen (tax included). Come and try the unique nagashi somen noodle experience at Hirobun restaurant at least once when you come to Kyoto!
Unsurprisingly, this cold noodle dish is usually enjoyed during the summer months and in a natural, outdoor setting.
Generally in Karate though... ... Nagashi translates into parry when it's about 'blocking' movement.
